The basic Sinhalese alphabet consists of a grouping of vowels, diphthongs, consonants and vowel symbols graphically represented as diacritic marks. The latter can precede and or follow a consonant, as well as being placed above and or below the parent symbol.

This language has roots in Sanskrit and Pali and had been used by inhabitants of Sri Lanka over many centuries. The Maldivian Divehi or Thaana is a derivative language consisting of a high percentage of Sinhala root words mixed with Arabic derivatives.
