NOTE 1. These vowel signs corresponding to the above independent vowels are positioned to the right, left, above, below or both sides of a valid Consonant letter.

NOTE: 2. The above illustrated Vowel Diacritic Symbols can ONLY occupy a position on a consonant and three vowels, namely , , and . This is another grammar rule to remember.

Learn how to write and pronounce all the Sinhalese Vowel Signs [Diacritic Vowel Marks "" "Pili"{plural}; "Pilla"{singular}] represented in each of the lessons as listed below.

So far you have learned about the Independent Sinhalese vowel signs in this illustration.
This is a good time to recapture what was in the previous lessons.

The Independent

Vowels

The vowel signs are sub-divided to sets indicating the Short and Long vowel sounds.

1. The Short sound Vowels are:

2. The Long sound Vowels are:

Sinhalese Vowel Consonants [4] as: , , , 

Iru Ilue

These are two other letters placed in this group. They are considered as Vowel Consonants, namely "Ri"  and "Ilu" . The former is used today, but the latter has been phased out since the 1900s. For thoroughness of learning we should continue to learn of their presence as one may run into this letter in the future while studying Sinhalese books prior to 1900s. The symbols "" and "" are the representations of the lengthened sounds, "IRue" and "Ilue".

LESSON EIGHTY TWO

 [Ayanna] Representation by Alkireema 

 Ayanna is the first independent Sinhalese vowel.

This Sinhalese vowel "" has the short sound of English "A" better represented as in "undo", "under".

The Sinhalese vowel "" is considered the inherent sound of the basic consonant symbols. Therefore there is no symbolic modification to the native shape of a consonant.

For the purpose of suppression of this inherent "a" sound, and thereby producing an abrupt short sound of any consonant, these symbols, Alkireem [Alkireema is singular] are used:

(1)  (e.g. , , , , ) [used with horizontal, descender or letter with sloping upper segments ONLY] and (e.g. , , , , , )

(2)  (, , ) [used with upright letters ONLY]

(3)  (, ) [used exclusively with  and ]

(4) In addition they also lengthen the sound of certain symbols: , , , , , , , , , etc.

IMPORTANT INGUISTIC FEATURES (GRAMMAR RULE):

1. There is no modification to the shape of the native consonant symbol, but the diacritic glyph is simply attached.

2. Vowel Diacritic Symbols can ONLY occupy a position on a consonant and three vowels, namely , , and .

LESSON EIGHTY THREE

 [Aayanna] Representation by AelaPili  

 Aayanna is the second independent Sinhalese vowel.

To add the  sound to a Sinhalese Consonant Letter and thus modifying it, a Vowel Sign representation of  is needed. Two similar symbols, differing only by their size and vertical positioning are used to accomplish this. The symbol names are "AlaPilla", for singular and "AlaPili" for plural.

The commoner, larger symbol is "" and applies to all the valid consonant letters excepting these four letters "", "", "", and "" which use the smaller one " " which I have named as "Dha AelaPilla". This symbol, positioned below the baseline is essential for traditional writing.

Some examples of consonants using the common symbol "" are "", "", "", "", "", and "" etc.

These Sinhalese Vowel Signs "" and " " are surrogates for "" and thus have the long sound of English "A" as in "Art", "Arc", "Farm".

IMPORTANT LINGUISTIC FEATURES (GRAMMAR RULE):

1. This vowel sign is only positioned immediately to the right of a valid Consonant letter which then modifies by lengthening the sound of the Consonant.

LESSON EIGHTY FOUR

 [Aeyanna] Representation by Keti AedaPili  

 Aeyanna is the third independent Sinhalese vowel.

To add the  sound to a Sinhalese Consonant Letter and thus modifying it, a Vowel Sign representation of  is needed. Three similar symbols, differing only by their size and vertical positioning are used to accomplish this.

The common symbol is "" and applies to all the valid consonant letters excepting these four letters "", "", "", and "" which use the smaller one " " and another, "" which uses the tall "Rayanna Keti Aedapilla" " ". The symbol names of others are "Keti Aedapilla", for singular and "Keti Aedapilli" for plural. I have named the smaller one " " as "Dha Keti AedaPilla". This symbol, positioned below the baseline is essential for traditional writing.

Some examples of consonants using the commoner symbol "" are "", "", "", "", "", and "" etc.

These Sinhalese Vowel Signs "" and " " are surrogates for "" and thus have the short sound of English "A" as in "At", "Adverb", "Act".

LESSON EIGHTY EIGHT

 [Uyanna] Representation by Keti Paapili  

      

 Uyanna is the seventh independent Sinhalese vowel.

To add the "" sound to a Sinhalese Consonant Letter and thus modifying it, a Vowel Sign representation of "" is needed. Five symbols, differing by their shape, size and vertical positioning are used to accomplish this. The symbol name is "Keti Paapilla", for singular and "Keti Paapilli" for plural. The word "PaaPilla" means "Footer Diacritic Mark".

The first symbol "" that I named as "Waka Keti Paapilla"[means "Curved-Footer Diacritic Mark"] applies to some valid consonant letters, most of which are elongated horizontally such as these: "".

The second symbol " " named "Keti Paapilla" applies to some valid consonant letters, most of which are elongated vertically such as these: "", "", "", "".

The third symbol " " applies to some valid consonant letters, some of which are elongated horizontally such as these:"". I have named this smaller one " " as "Dha Keti PaaPilla". This symbol is essential for traditional writing of the following: "".

The fourth symbol "" which is the "Keti Aedapilla" also serves as "Rayanna Keti PaaPilla" to modify "" to"".

The fifth symbol is "", which replaces "" when the latter is modified with a Keti PaaPilla.

These Sinhalese Vowel Signs for "" has the short sound of English "U" as in "put", "ubiquitous", "push".

IMPORTANT LINGUISTIC FEATURES (GRAMMAR RULES):

1. Uyanna can begin a word.

2. Uyanna cannot occur in the middle of a word.

Vowel Signs of  [Ueyanna] "     " "Diga Paapili"  

LESSON EIGHTY NINE

 [Ueyanna] Representation by Diga Paapili  

    

 Ueyanna is the eighth independent Sinhalese vowel.

To add the "" sound to a Sinhalese Consonant Letter and thus modifying it, a Vowel Sign representation of "" is needed. Five symbols, differing by their shape, size and vertical positioning are used to accomplish this. The symbol name is "Diga Paapilla", for singular and "Diga Paapilli" for plural. The word "PaaPilla" means "Footer Diacritic Mark".

The first symbol " " that I named as "Waka Diga Paapilla"[means "Curved-Footer Diacritic Mark"] applies to some valid consonant letters, most of which are elongated horizontally such as these: "".

The second symbol " " named "Diga Paapilla" applies to some valid consonant letters, most of which are elongated vertically such as these: "", "", "", "".

The third symbol " " applies to some valid consonant letters, some of which are elongated horizontally such as these:"". I have named this smaller one " " as "Dha Diga PaaPilla". This symbol is essential for traditional writing of the following: "".

The fourth symbol "" which is the "Diga Aedapilla" also serves as "Rayanna Diga PaaPilla" to modify "" to"".

The fifth symbol is "", which replaces "" when the latter is modified with a Diga PaaPilla.

These Sinhalese Vowel Signs for "" has the long sound of English "Ue", "oo". as in "true" and "groove".
