LESSON FIFTY EIGHT

Sinhalese Consonants  Pa class [6]       -   

The consonant signs of the "Pa" class can be classified into three groups, based on the vocalization. i.e. unaspirated, aspirated and nasal:



1. Unaspirated consonants [two]  

 named "Alpapraana Payanna" is pronounced "pa"

 named "Alpapraana Bayanna" is pronounced "ba"









2. Aspirated consonants [two]  

 named "Mahaapraana Payanna" is pronounced "pa"

 named "Mahaapraana Bhayanna" is pronounced "bha"



3. Nasal consonants [two]  

 named "Mayanna" is pronounced "ma"

 named "Amba Bayanna" is pronounced "mba"



The above are the "Pa" class symbols and can occupy any position within a word except for  which cannot occur in the initial position of a word.

 Alpapraana Payanna  

Alpapraana Payanna  is the thirty-second Sinhalese consonant. When no vowel is written with it, like all the consonants, "Alpapraana Payanna " is vocalized by means of the first vowel , which though unwritten is pronounced after it, as "pa". It has the short sound of English "p" represented as in "puck", "pump" and "pup".



How to write this letter:

This consonant letter " Alpapraana Payanna" of the Sinhalese alphabet is a horizontal one as it lies between the 'horizontal height' and 'baseline' rules.

Alpapraana Bayanna  is the thirty-fourth Sinhalese consonant. When no vowel is written with it, like all the consonants, "Alpapraana Bayanna " is vocalized by means of the first vowel , which though unwritten is pronounced after it, as "Ba". It has the short sound of English "b" represented as in "bun", "bus" and "button".

Please observe the bottom center of this letter. There is NO sharp hook, which is present in a similar appearing letter, " Mahaapraana Kayanna".

Amba Bayanna  is the thirty-seventh Sinhalese consonant. The symbol is vocalized as "mb". There are no words begining with it, but occurs within words.

When no vowel is written with it, like all the consonants, "Amba Bayanna " is vocalized by means of the first vowel , which though unwritten is pronounced after it, as "mba". It has the coalesced sound of English "mb" represented as in "comb", "bomb" and "member".
